invisible suffering

The intention with this visual art series Invisible Suffering is to build a body of work, that places a point on our timeline: 2020 as the reflection point. A year where we are still living the consequences of a pandemic, white supremacy, femicides, indigenous rights violations, and changes in our climate, just to name a few. It’s a push for these topics to be examined as not out of a vacuum, but reiterated systems of oppression and the suffering incurred throughout decades, centuries, and even millennia.

The Free Center, granted the initial creation of this work through their “Independent Artist Fund,” and my hope was to bring these paintings to the public as an exhibition. Thanks to this grant, I was able to Invisible Suffering as a solo exhibit at both Charter Oak Cultural Center (March 11 - April 6, 2022) and at Trinity College (May 2 - 6, 2022), followed by several community conversations to begin a “politics of healing.” My inquiry is on how we can use art as the teacher and the holding of space, so we can begin to devise plans on how we can heal each other.
