artist statement

Living entails participating in dialogue, to question and draw connections between the different aspects that appear in our lives. As an educator and abstract visual artist, I exist at the intersections of several disciplines. Being an educator and scholar by training, I often share my research interests through my teaching. But my visual art is an invitation to connect with all the different identities I hold, as well as to link my research interests into a creative output. By creating abstract visual art, complicated symbols that are referential to different types of contexts are removed to allow the possibility to engage with ideas. I use acrylic paint to build layers of colors and textures, to enable forms to take shape on the canvas, and to inspire people to consider various topics. My art is multi-referential as I often infuse literary and musical references in my visual art and writing, continuing the conversation on what inspires me in the world. Art is an exceptional catalyst because it opens possibilities that are sometimes stifled by limiting beliefs. With this conviction, my pedagogy can go beyond the classroom.
